Frozen in Time: A PHOTOGRAPHY RETROSPECTIVE

A photograph, seemingly still, contains an energy, a power. The photographer, as the artist, sees, captures that moment, and consciously or sub-consciously freezes it. That moment represents a moment of the moment, not actually the moment itself. In that instant, there now exists an intersection between what was, what is and how the viewer interprets what they are seeing and feeling.

My dear father photographed everything—the happy, the sad, parties, holidays, travels, accidents and even funerals. He wanted that imprint on our lives. Still, today, I recall much of my life through the lens of his camera, in his constant snapshots. He froze moments that opened doors to our past. I do not hold on to words or actions, it is photographs that serve to create an indelible imprint on my memory.

Images have the power to elicit emotions. “There is only you and your camera. The limitations in your photography are in yourself, for what we see is what we are.” Photography provokes, educates, inspires and entertains. It transcends culture and language. The pictures are there, we just have to take them.

For many years, NEWORLD REVIEW has been my creative milieu. In this issue, our editor, Fred Beauford, has extended to me an invitation to present to you, dear reader, some of my favorite photographs. Time moves on and in the stilling the moments I have chosen to ‘freeze,’ may something you see be felt and remembered forever.
